Abstract

This study proposes a new multi-energy system (MES) planning framework for enabling CHP-based energy systems to accommodate growing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES), by utilizing demand response (DR) solutions. Introducing such price-based DR into the multi-energy system entails the investment of smart metering(SM), which results in the concerned problem to be a two-stage optimization program from planning stage to operation stage–-the placement of SM and the pricing strategy for the demand-side are jointly optimized with the RES installation planning to minimize the total economic costs of the system. The proposed two-stage model is developed through a scenario-based stochastic formulation, to explicitly capture the correlated uncertainties from customers’ varying responsivity, energy demand, and the RES generation. The proposed methodology is tested on a modified RES system and the obtained results confirm its effectiveness.
