Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of current developments in the field of smart medical services. Smart medical services are often cited as a promising solution to support elderly or disabled people. By providing a wide variety of services, they bear an immense potential for revolutionizing the way health services are provided in the future. In general, smart medical services can be clustered into three categories focusing on the detection and prevention of emergency situations, long-term treatment of chronic diseases, and the prevention and early-detection of illnesses. This paper provides an overview over the different types of applications and describes several research demonstrators and prototype systems for each category.
