Abstract

Smart Growth is an approach to a more sustainable future. Starting from the regional planning level, it works on enhancing the living environment and creating a more sustainable community. The research aims to test the current applicability of Smart Growth on the Greater Cairo Region (G.C.R.) on the Regional strategy level. The research transforms the Smart Growth definition and principles into categories that are more related to strategy and implementation and uses these categories to test the compliance of the G.C.R. urban development strategy with Smart Growth. Each category is divided into several questions. These questions are used as an expert assessment survey for G.C.R. urban development strategy. Categories are sorted according to the strategy’s compliance and thus the ease of applicability on the Greater Cairo Region. The results show that three categories (Housing Plan, Planning Profile & Infrastructure) have over 50% compliance with Smart Growth. There are some basic elements present in the plan that can be a start for Smart Growth implementation. Smart Growth implementation would require effort in implementation but would put the G.C.R. on the path to future sustainable development.
