Abstract

This paper discusses the first year of a Western Australian peak demand management trial using direct load control (DLC) of air conditioners. The trial aims to demonstrate the use of Smart Grid technology as a valid means of implementing and conducting direct load control of residential air conditioners, with no noticeable adverse impact on comfort levels. The trial was conducted by Western Power (Electricity Networks Corporation) in collaboration with Synergy (Electricity Retail Corporation) during the 2011 summer period. Preliminary findings highlight that, while there were some customer retention and technical challenges, a notable reduction in peak demand was achieved. This gives initial validation of the use of Smart Grid technology for direct load control of air conditioners and provides a sound basis from which to plan and implement the second year of the trial.
