Abstract

Solid waste management has been one of our key environmental challenges, which, in addition to disrupting the environment's equilibrium, has negative consequences for society's health. One of the most pressing issues of our time is identifying, monitoring, and managing trash. The conventional method of manually monitoring garbage in waste bins is a complex, time-consuming procedure that requires more human work, time, and money, and is in no way compatible with modern technologies. In this paper, a smart garbage monitoring system is designed by using the concepts of IoT and cloud computing. We automate the process of garbage monitoring using ultrasonic sensors and NodeMCU. Cloud computing is used to analyze and access the real-time data collected through deployed bins. Further, we use the cluster-first route-second algorithm to provide an optimal route for garbage collection. An android application is also developed for the users to obtain the status of bins in their neighborhood and fetch the location of the nearest empty dustbin from their location.
