Abstract

Due to rapid urbanization, the concept of smart cities is becoming increasingly popular. Smart city projects aim to improve the living conditions for the society at large, thereby creating sustainable, long term benefits. But, do smart cities aid in the development of knowledge societies? Or, are knowledge societies the necessary perquisites to smart cities? Can a causal relationship be established between these two ideals? We attempt to reflect on these questions and conjecture that there may be a synergistic, rather than symbiotic, link between knowledge societies and smart cities. While both are attempts at sustainable development, the design emphasis may be altogether distinct.
