Abstract

An advanced wireless backhaul system based on smart beamforming (BF) is proposed. The proposed system consists of commercial Wi-Fi chipset, smart antennas based on phased array, and field programmable gate array (FPGA). The optimal BF direction is found by using optimal path-finding algorithm on the top of FPGA to control smart antennas, where optimal path-finding algorithm is a kind of direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm. Auto alignment by smart BF brings the time reduction of initial installation and stable QoS in non line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. Also, the devices don't need any special tool of alignment at the installation. In addition, SWB supports point to multi-point (P2MP) topology thanks to multi-user scheduler. Field test results demonstrate that SWB not only is enough solution to provide IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi services but also is robust solution in heavy traffic environments.
