Abstract

The agriculture sector has the great scope for the improvement with the use of latest technological advancements and the decision support systems in order to have surplus crop productions in the market for the increasing population. The different agricultural activities in the fields can be performed and monitored with the use of smart devices, remote sensors, UAVs/Drones, IoT (Internet of Things) for data gathering and analysis to timely fulfil the demand of food in the market and support survival on the planet. IoT based drones come as boon to analyze data on the go and uniformly cover the crop area remotely. IoT enabled devices such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) when integrated with different sensors and cameras can be applied in a variety of agricultural applications related to crops management for capturing sensor and image-based data. The newer technologies such as IoT and UAVs called as IoD (Internet of Drones) have a lot of potential to change the practices that have been performed in the area of agriculture. Such technologies will enable the farmers to make the decisions relatively in the lesser time to manage the crops in an effective manner by reducing the cost and increasing the yields. The presented chapter discusses various concepts related to IoT based drone technologies and the different types of sensors and the devices that can be used to collect the data from the farm lands. This chapter discusses overviews and the strategies to acquire the data with the UAVs using static or fixed type approaches. This chapter discusses about how IoD are used in the various applications of agriculture to achieve smart and precision farming. Emerging technologies and development of agricultural IoD with its challenges to adapt itself in harsh field environment for achieving accuracy are discussed.
