Abstract

The structural changes in poly(vinyl alcohol) films by annealing and/or stretching were observed by means of small-angle neutron scattering. The difference in the neutron scattering length densities of crystalline regions and amorphous regions was made by incorporation of D 2 O into the amorphous regions. In a raw cast film, the crystalline regions with cylindrical shape were randomly distributed. By stretching the film, the long axes of the crystalline regions were arranged to the stretch direction. On the other hand, the annealed film was separated to many domains where the crystalline regions and the amorphous regions were mutually stacked. Adding the stretch to the film in annealing, the stacking axes of the domains were aligned to the stretch direction.
