Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of high photovoltaic penetration on small signal stability of multi-source power system and proposes a new method which enables conventional PV system to improve the frequency response of the low inertia power system. The operating point of PV is linearized and shifted with respect to the change in grid frequency using a fuzzy interface system. A linearized multi-area model interconnected with tie-line comprises different generating sources is considered as a study case system. The system is extended to a more realistic network by incorporating the various system nonlinearities like generation rate constraint, governor dead band and area control error signal delay. To identify the effect of PV on system damping, eigenvalue analysis is carried out on the studies system. The proposed control scheme is found to be providing stabilizing power which may improve the frequency nadir and rate of change of frequency when the system is subjected to load change.
