Abstract

It is not uncommon to perform extracapsular cataract surgery on a patient whose pupil is difficult to dilate, or a pupil that has constricted after anterior capsulotomy, nucleus removal, and prior to IOL implantation. We have designed a simple to use, disposable, IOL glide that would facilitate the introduction of an intraocular lens through a small or poorly dilated pupil. This glide, made of medical grade polyethylene, can atraumatically dilate the pupil and enable lens placement within the capsular bag. In addition the glide, based on the Sheets modification, is universal in that it can be used to implant either anterior or posterior chamber lenses. The glide is particularly useful for facilitating capsular bag implantation of IOLs through pupils of varying diameters.
