Abstract

The title of this autobiography, referring as it does to the author's patients, places the emphasis appropriately, for Dr. Goldbloom's candid account of his life shows him to have been unburdened by conceit. This is the more remarkable because he is a facile, versatile and talented person. The unique potentialities of an autobiography are magnificently realized by a forthright, remarkably objective revelation of the dreams and purposes which determined his career. A balanced consideration of the forces which mold human behavior makes one hesitate to ascribe a preponderant role to either hereditary or environmental influences. If one happens to place great reliance on the popular version of an ideal parent-infant relationship, he may be discomfited to find that in spite of inauspicious beginnings Alton Goldbloom managed to succeed pretty well by material standards and seems to have enjoyed a large measure of happiness.
