Abstract
The characteristic value problem for free vibrations of a steadily rotating variable area inextensible string with end masses is solved numerically for strings with constant area, constant stress, and a type of exponential taper. Several sets of numerical results are presented (in both tabular and graphical formats), which, it is hoped, will be helpful in evaluating numerical methods used in space tether applications. In addition, approximate formulas are developed for quick natural frequency estimation in two limiting cases.
