Abstract

Purpose: Ligaments are short bands of fibrous connective tissue responsible for transmitting load from bone to bone across joints and guiding normal joint motion. Cruciate ligaments within the human knee joint, in particular the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), are susceptible to degeneration, resulting in pain, reduced mobility and development of the degenerative joint disease of osteoarthritis (OA). There is currently a paucity of knowledge on how ACL degeneration and disease can lead to OA. Small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs), such as microRNAs (miRs) and small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA), are emerging as important regulators of gene expression.
