Abstract

The Kondo-lattice model is studied by a self-consistent incremental method. The ground-state energy and the magnetic moment are calculated. An explanation is offered for the small magnetic moments. It is based on the interplay between the formation of Kondo singlets and the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interaction. However, one must go beyond a simple superposition of these two competing physical phenomena in order to derive the small moments.
