Abstract

Neonatal small left colon syndrome is an uncommon cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. In 1974, Davis coined the term small left colon syndrome. He described 20 infants with colonic obstruction not caused by a meconium plug or Hirschsprung’s disease. Neonatal small left colon syndrome is characterized by an abrupt colonic caliber transition at or near the splenic flexure. In the past, neonatal small left colon syndrome was included in the spectrum of obstructive conditions referred to as meconium plug syndrome. There is a strong association between neonatal small left colon syndrome and maternal gestational diabetes mellitus.
