Abstract

This paper describes a speech assignment that, drawing upon the philosophy of teaching and learning described in Timothy Gallwey's The Inner Game of Tennis, permits students to learn the principles of good speaking inductively and experientially. Students describe a geometric figure well enough so that their listeners can draw the described image. Success with this simple speaking task motivates students to learn the principles of effective speaking and prepares them for more elaborate speaking assignments.
