Abstract

The variations of the molar conductivity of electrolytes versus concentration in solvents of low dielectric constant, show three different kinds of behaviour depending on the concentration range. Near saturation, small charged ionic clusters are formed and stabilized. Upon dilution, they “burst” firstly into neutral species which are then dissociated into some free ions. The average size of these small particles would be nearly 10 Å, as shown by electron microscopy observation. We calculate theoretically a cluster size by a technique similar to the method used in the determination of the critical size in heterogeneous nucleation. The order of magnitude obtained agrees very well with experiment, i.e. ≈ 10 Å.
