Abstract

The differential Compton scattering cross section for 17 MeV photons has been measured from 1.33° to 7°. Compton electrons produced in NaI(Tl) crystals and plastic scintillators as scattering material were registered in coincidence with the scattered photons. Within the error limits, the results are consistent with both the Klein-Nishina formula and the correct expression for the Compton scattering cross section which includes the contributions of higher order corrections. In the angular range investigated an upper limit of 15% of the Klein-Nishina cross section can be set for possible contributions to the total differential cross section from radiative corrections and double Compton scattering.
