Abstract

Abstract Sm 3+ doped (Ca, Mg, Zr)GGG crystal has been grown by Czochralski technique. Its optical absorption, fluorescence and lifetime were studied. The refractive index and absorption cross-section were calculated. Judd–Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters ( Ω t ), the spontaneous emission probabilities, the branching ratios, electric-dipole line strengths, magnetic-dipole line strengths and the radiative lifetime of the state 4 G 5/2 . The stimulated emission cross-sections at 566, 613, 649, and 709 nm were calculated. The decay curve of the 4 G 5/2 level of Sm 3+ ions with relatively low concentration (0.27 mol/L) was nearly single exponential and the experiment fluorescence lifetime ( τ exp ) was determined.
