Abstract

Microprobe analysis and theoretical calculations based on Hooke's law are used to investigate Sm2Fe17Nx nitrides produced by N2 and NH3 interstitial modification. In the case of molecular nitrogen, stress and strain as well as Curie temperature, magnetization and anisotropy exhibit a smooth spatial variation, while nitrogen overloading due to the presence of ammonia leads to large excess strain and lattice incoherency. Discontinuous nitrogen profiles are associated with the occurrence of microcracks.
