Abstract

We theoretically investigate the possibility of slowing and cooling a collisionless atomic gas using a phase-modulated pump field. We consider a single-pump ring cavity with asymmetric cavity losses containing a beam of N polarizable pointlike particles. We show using analytical and numerical analysis that different regimes of the atom-light interaction can be identified and for properly chosen parameters this can lead to effective slowing of the atomic ensemble.
