Abstract

The American Civil War marked the last time more soldiers died from disease than from enemy bullets and the beginning of medical science’s movement beyond folklore and superstition. The wound management techniques described that were practiced just a little more than a century ago provide a dramatic and sharp counterpoint to current wound management procedures.
