Abstract

Recent developments in virology require a re-examination of the suggestion that schizophrenia may be caused by infectious agents. Functional damage to brain cells must be considered as a possibility even in the absence of microscopically visible structural change. In some patients slow or latent viruses may be involved in the development of schizophrenia. This hypothesis is compatible with clinical aspects of the disease, and also its reported immunological abnormalities, epidemiological aspects, and familial occurrence.
