Abstract

Shulamit Ramon is senior lecturer in social work and director of the post-qualifying interprofessional Diploma in Innovation in Mental Health Work at the London School of Economics. Researcher into community mental health systems, she participated in a Tempus programme on Community Mental Health in Slovenia. Dr Ramon is currently coordinating a Tempus programme aimed at setting up social work education in the Ukraine, and advises the new department of social work in the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences. SUMMARY The paper contextualizes Slovenian social work in terras of the political, social, economic and cultural changes which Slovenia has gone through recently. The frame work of social work education and services is then outlined. Two major examples of unexpected innovative social work projects are outlined and analysed. The implications of these examples to Slovenian social work practice and theory are looked at in the conclusions.
