Abstract

Welcome to a special issue of NRC, which focuses on minimizing risk of falls and fractures in older people. This coincides with the recent launch of a website that offers older people advice on how to prevent themselves from falling – www.balancetraining.org.uk – developed by the University of Southampton in collaboration with Help the Aged and Riomed. The site was produced after researchers at the University discovered that older people often reject falls-prevention advice as they find it patronizing, or think that ‘nothing can be done to solve the problem’. About a third of all people aged over 65 years fall each year and among those given the opportunity to participate in a falls-prevention programme, often, over 50% decide not to take part.
