Abstract
Hot desert environments with low humidity and strong winds provide some of the most difficult conditions in which to build good concrete roads. This paper describes the materials, plant and methods that were used to construct successfully the Azraq to Jafr highway in Jordan where these conditions prevailed. Of particular importance to the outcome of the project were the use of good quality materials and the most suitable concrete mixing and paving plant available, together with the adoption of very effective curing procedures. Contraction joint dowel bars were mechanically inserted by th slip form paver, which resulted in the very good results that are given in this paper
