Abstract

The paper deals with fault detection (FD) of interturn short-circuit in stator windings (SF) in three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors (IM) based on sliding mode observers (SMO). Theoretical developments of both healthy and faulty IM models in the abc-reference frame highlight the impact of such fault. IM modeling in αβ-frame is investigated in order to reconstruct current and speed IM using first-order SMO. A comparison of the actual behavior of IM and the expected behavior given by SMO produces a set of residuals sensitive to faults, which are compared to defined thresholds. Simulation results carried out under MATLAB/Simulink show effectiveness of first-order SMO based-on algorithm to detect the SF.
