Abstract

The world is currently suffering from informational future shock. The author places the SABC against this milieu and discusses the responsibility of the different departments and their contribution to education in South Africa. The unique political and deraographical problems that South Africa has to contend with, result in the integration of television, the computer and telecommunication to bring about the long-term benefits of educational technology. The author postulates certain prerequisites for the optimum educational use of the SABC. Future shock in South Africa is intense: it is, at the same time, a developed and a developing country. This challenge should be met. The SABC will pay attention to a formal ‘high school of the air” to serve the unschooled labour force in South Africa. Both non-formal and informal education will be cardinal factors in the educational programme planning of the SABC. This organisation will constantly have to attend to contemporary technological advancement - cable, satellite, etc. - in the design of its educational programming. The SABC accepts this challenge and invites educational institutions in South Africa to make use of its services.
