Abstract

The possibility that dietary nitrogen enchances sleep duration was investigated. An increase microbial protein production was obtained by addition into the rumen of 0.1–0.4 g/kg of coating urea in 2 sheep with continuous monitoring during 2 months of polygraphic activity and ingestive behavior. The data demonstrate an increase in both NREM and REM sleep duration on a high-protein diet irrespective of the physical nature of the regimen.
