Abstract
Sleep plays a critical role in health across the lifespan, yet research applying the tools and techniques from health communication to promote sleep has been limited. This entry provides a primer on the importance of sleep and circadian health; summarizes the available literature on sleep in health communication; and identifies populations at high risk for sleep issues and potential health communication strategies to combat these barriers. We conclude with a call for more attention to sleep in the field of health communication, for the tools and techniques offer tremendous opportunities for extending and refining our knowledge of health communication principles and practice.
