Abstract

Adolescent depression, exacerbated by disrupted sleep patterns, presents a significant concern. This quality improvement project introduces personalized sleep hygiene education (SHE) as a nonpharmacologic intervention to address depressive symptoms. The efficacy of personalized SHE plans in reducing depressive symptoms among adolescents in outpatient clinical settings, measured by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), was evaluated. The goal was a clinically significant reduction in PHQ-9 scores with a 65% compliance rate within 4 to 6 weeks. A pre-post design was used. Adolescents diagnosed with depression received personalized SHE plans during their initial visit. Follow-up assessments conducted at 4 to 6 weeks evaluated changes in depressive symptoms. Participants were stratified based on medication use. Of 25 eligible adolescents, 16 (64%) participated, showing significant reductions in PHQ-9 scores. Improvements demonstrated shifts from moderate to mild depression levels and minimal symptoms. This project underscores personalized SHE as a cost-effective, clinically meaningful intervention for adolescent depression management within clinical settings.
