Abstract

"Science and Technology in Islam" is, besides "History of Arab-Islamic Literature", one of Fuat Sezgin's most important works. The five-volume work, published in 2003, aims to introduce the scientific and technical tools and equipment designed by Muslim scholars in the history of science and technology and reproduced by Fuat Sezgin on the basis of written sources for exhibition in the Museum of the History of Arab-Islamic Sciences in Frankfurt. The first volume, titled Introduction to the History of Arab-Islamic Sciences, is a unique text that reflects all of Fuat Sezgin's academic experience and accumulation of knowledge. Using the facts and viewpoints provided, this volume also seeks to address the following essential questions what scientific breakthroughs have resulted from Islamic culture, what cultural and technological products have been revealed, and which names have risen to prominence as a result? How did these studies make their way to the West, and how did they contribute to the development of contemporary science? What causes the Islamic world's scientific progress to stagnate and reverse? Is this kind of impasse and regress possible? What is the next stage for Islamic civilization, which has been stagnant and in decline for nearly 350 years? Fuat Sezgin was stimulated by these topics, which were not just intellectual but also philosophical, throughout his life. Science and Technology in Islam provide an informative and convincing response to him.
