Abstract

The coats of arms of cities are a unique sign which distinguishes them from others municipals. There are composed used strict heraldic rules. The municipal coat of arms is a signum publicum – a public sign so should be noble and dignified. Many coats of arms of Polish cities are comprised of human beings depicted without any clothes or scantily dressed. The author discussed the reason of used the image of the nude human body in a coat of arms. The variety of symbolism and inspiration of depiction comes from the willingness of presenting holy patrons of the city, founding myths or heraldic mottoes. The article presents a polish municipal coat of arms which at escutcheon are humans without any clothes or with lack clothing and analysed symbolism of depiction searching inspiration of them in the Bible, hagiography, traditions and myths and regional legends.
