Abstract

Wind energy is one of the most economic and environment friendly energy source. Recently, the study of induction machines as an application in wind power systems has attracted considerable attention. Self excited induction generators (SEIGs) have found wide spread use in energy systems such as wind and small hydro. Unlike grid connected induction generators, the frequency of SEIG varies with the rotor speed, the excitation capacitance and load. The performance of a grid connected induction generator considering the skin effect has been analyzed by different researchers, however the performance of self excited induction generators considering the skin effect has not been investigated yet. This paper determines the performance of an SEIG considering the skin effect. The calculated results are compared with the experimental ones for a 7.5 hp industrial type induction machine (IM) in the case of no load condition.
