Abstract

Schaefer and Redelmeier have done an outstanding job on their book<i>Skin Barrier: Principles of Percutaneous Absorption.</i>Their combined expertise in skin barrier function and lipid physical chemistry has produced a text with relevance to the medical community, pharmaceutical research and development community, and those interested in the fundamentals of molecular transport through the stratum corneum. The book is divided into 6 main sections dealing with skin structure and function, stratum corneum composition and structure, membrane diffusion theory and its application to the stratum corneum, and 3 sections on the prediction and measurement of percutaneous absorption. The introductory sections on skin and stratum corneum structure and composition are a thorough update of information found in previous books. These chapters form a strong biological, biochemical, and ultrastructural framework.
