Abstract

There are two mechanisms by which free full-thickness allografts are rejected: an early endothelial and a late epithelial type. These two types occur because there are apparently 2 target cells against which rejection is directed: the endothelial and the epithelial cell. The endothelial appears to be mediated by humoral antibodies and the epithelial by small lymphocytes.
