Abstract

INTRODUCTION Many cases of subcutaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon have been described in association with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or fracture of the distal radius. However, such injuries have rarely been reported to result from participation in sporting activities. We report 3 rare cases of skiing-induced rupture of the EPL tendon between 1999 and 2005. In 2 of the 3 cases, EPL tendon rupture occurred at the dorsal aspect of the wrist as the skiers planted their ski pole into the snow. In the third case, commonly known as ‘‘mallet thumb,’’ EPL tendon rupture occurred at the point where the EPL tendon inserts into the distal phalanx and resulted from a fall while the patient was holding a ski pole. We performed surgery in each of the three cases. After surgery, none of the patients had any symptoms or limitations in activities of daily living, and all could return to skiing at the same level as before.
