Abstract

Electrodynamics with a general local and linear constitutive law involves a constitutive tensor of 36 independent parameters for electromagnetic media. This tensor is irreducibly decomposed into three independent sets of parameters: the principal part of 20 components (known as the bianisotropic media), the axion part of 1 component and the skewon part of 15 independent components. The latter set is the object of our current consideration. In order to extract the characteristic properties of the hypothetic skewon, we study the case of a medium with an isotropic principal part but a vector skewon part. Thus, skewon modified dielectric and diamagnetic are identified. The former case is studied in some detail. We derive the dispersion relation and the ray surface equation. The special features of these hypothetic materials are briefly discussed.
