Abstract

1. 1. The function of red and white skeletal muscle fibres of the coalfish ( Gadus virens L.) is described at sustained swimming speeds of up to 3 fish lengths per sec (L/S) by training fish and measuring the resulting muscle fibre hypertrophy. 2. 2. Above 1 L/S the relation between fibre hypertrophy and swimming velocity is given for the red fibres by γ = 20·80χ+120·00 and for the white fibres by γ = 72·81χ−72·90.
