Abstract

Size segregation is a serious issue in numerous industries related to particulate materials including agriculture, food, and feed. A redesigned, second generation primary segregation shear cell (PSSC-II) was fabricated to simulate the size segregation occurring in a feed trough delivery system. Size segregation of binary mixtures was examined in terms of the effects of size ratio, density and shape. The binary mixtures comprised of two particulate materials, spherical shaped glass beads and angular shaped poultry feed were tested. In this study, two size ratios, 3:1 and 6:1, were used. It was determined that size segregation would not readily occur for binary mixtures of spherical coarse particles and low density of fine particles compared with the same size ratio of a binary mixture but different combinations, i.e., angular shapes as coarse particles and high density fine particles.
