Abstract

A methodology has been developed to extend an existing linear programming model for the optimization of the combined generation of power and process heat for industrial sites. This new approach introduces capital cost for buying and maintaining an arbitrary number of plant elements into the objective function of the model. The aim is to optimize the size of the generation equipment, depending on the characteristics of the plant load and tariff conditions for energy supply. The capability of the previous model version for analysis of the operation of existing plants is enlarged to include a design tool for new plants and retrofits for existing plants. An example of optimization is shown for an industrial site with the option to retrofit a gas turbine with exhaust-gas heat-recovery.
