Abstract

A semantic differential was used by 168 subjects to rate forest, beach, small town, desert, and large city. Four factor scales were produced: evaluation, spiritual, activity, and aesthetic appeal. These scales served as the dependent variables in four analyses of variance in which the independent variables were size of home town and type of environment. The results showed that size of home town significantly affected perceptions of the various environments.
