Stimuli We manipulated object width in a visual target discrimination task similar to that of Egly et al.1. Subjects were presented with two parallel rectangles or two trapezoids, with both objects presented vertically or horizontally. Rectangles were identical and of two possible widths ('narrow' or 'large'). Trapezoids were identical but in opposite orientations, with the 'narrow' base of one object adjacent to the 'large' base of the other. Results
