Abstract

Abstract Micromorphic gastropods, a few mm in size, are locally common in the Silurian faunas of Gotland. Two localities investigated, Möllbos 1 and Petsarve 9, contain many wellpreserved micromorphic gastropods. Size-frequency analyses of the most abundant species in each of the two fauans are presented. The Möllbos 1 species, trochinid sp. a, possibly being an oriostomatacean, shows almost normal size distribution, indicating a life assemblage produced by natural mortality among older individuals. The Petsarve 9 species, Oriostoma sp. a, shows a wide, irregular distribution, suggesting a life assemblage produced by event mass-mortality. The life strategy of many micromorphic gastropods is interpreted as an algal foliage dwelling mode of life. In the algal foliage they probably lived as microherbivorous browsers.
