Abstract

Poly(oxyethylene) n-alkyl ethers of formula CH 3(OCH 2CH 2) m O(CH 2) n H, where m has number-average values of 27 or 53 and n has unique values in the range 12 to 30, have been investigated with regard to the behavior of their aqueous micellar solutions in size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) on Sepharose 4B gel. Semiquantitative agreement is found between the experimental SEC curves and the behavior predicted by Coll's equations. The results can be used to show that the micellar aggregation numbers are large (⩾100) and that the micellar size distributions are narrow.
