Abstract

No research exists on the effect of size on the strength of structural bamboo scrimber, but this factor is important to determine the design strength by the reliability theory. Specimens of five section types were designed to verify the feasibility of the “Weibull brittle-fracture theory” to understand the size effect of structural bamboo scrimber. The value of the section-effect parameters on the mean and standard compressive strengths was estimated by the slope and parametric methods. The differences between the different methods have been discussed, and an optimal s value of the section-effect parameters and the corresponding β value of the section-effect reduction factor have been provided.
