Abstract

A relationship between size and fracture probability for metals as well as ceramics is developed. This dynamic scale-up relationship is formally identical with Weibull's law. However, it is not a consequence of the statistics of flow distribution but follows from a least action law for dynamic fracture. For Hookean bodies this law can be derived from theoretical concepts. For metals, an empirical relationship is used to arrive at similar results.
