Abstract
Atmospheric aerosol samples were collected with a combination of a cyclone, a 4-stage cascade impactor and a 3-stage screen diffusion battery. On the same substrates (membrane filters or polycarbonate foils) a number of independent analyses were performed: total particulate mass by means of an electrobalance, elemental carbon with a soot photometer and sulphur through particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). The different source and aging processes of soot and sulphur caused systematic differences in the mass size distributions of the different elements. The shape of the distributions could be related to the apparent age of the aerosol under different meteorological conditions.
