Abstract

The European Conferences on Microcirculation have, beginning in 1960, offered an international forum of the first magnitude for outstanding scientists and physicians throughout the world. This is the proceedings of the sixth conference held in Aalborg, Denmark, in 1970. This report covers original research in the field of hemorrheology, vital microscopy, the microcirculation in shock, vascular reactivity, capillary transport, lymphatics, isotope techniques, cerebral blood flow, platelets, fibrinolysin, coagulation, and ultrastructure. For example, there is basic evidence presented that (1) the maximum oxygen transport capacity coincides with a hematocrit value of 30%, (2) norepinephrine and angiotensin decrease capillary perfusion, (3) hyperbaric oxygen causes vasoconstriction which decreases capillary perfusion, (4) thermal burns cause microemboli in the microvessels of the lungs, (5) β-receptor blocking agents inhibit platelet aggregation, (6) aspirin inhibits platelet aggregation, (7) intraglomemlar thrombi are found in renal failure, and (8) dextran accelerates the clotting of fibrinogen by thrombin.
